[ Sabrina had been too preoccupied by Nick's devilish smile and his smooth moves, but she had glimpsed "Ms. Wardwell" and her, dare she say it, date.

She hadn't looked too eager that night. ]

( oh boy. she hadn't expected sabrina to really pay attention then when she'd had her own fun )

His name is Adam. Not Adam-- ( just to be clear ) He-- was her fiance.

[melodramagic]

Ms. Wardwell had a fiance?

[ The shock colours her tone easily; she always thought Mary Wardwell lived in the cottage alone! ]

He'd been travelling.

[melodramagic]

[ It's difficult to picture quiet, meek Mary with a fiance who seemed so enthusiastic, but maybe Sabrina didn't know her as well as she thought. ]

Why did he appear to you if he's Ms. Wardwell's fiance?

( sabrina why must you-- )

( she would just leave it there but she'd stopped lying to sabrina )

His kindness was something I hadn't expected. He loved her. Honestly.

( like no man she'd met and it had been something terrifying and beautiful for her. she just doesn't know if she can admit the final parr. that she loved him )

[melodramagic]

[ Eve's sons make sense to her, but someone who was essentially a stranger to Lilith piques Sabrina's curiosity.

Or rather, has her feeling quite nosy. ]

( and on its own if it had been any other man it wouldn't have been any issue, she could have killed him as intended and gotten on with her job. but adam had been so kind, had let lilith lead, had never taken from her more than what she'd wished. and his words-- all of it was honest and genuine and he shouldn't have died for it.

when she speaks again there's a very obvious changing of the subject. she'll let sabrina push it back with questions but free conversation-- )

Ms. Wardwell was usually alone whenever we saw her. She didn't talk much about her personal life.

[ And she feels bad for never asking. ]

( the pause and her tone will tell sabrina everything, that the question hurts her a little (even though she'd first thought to) and how honest her answer is )

( one more pause because this part is slightly more difficult to admit. because she knows sabrina will ask why )

[melodramagic]

[ Her jaw drops, so startled that the worst did happen. ]

( there's a short pause and rather than repeat it-- )

[melodramagic]

[ She can only imagine a couple of reasons why the Dark Lord would do such a thing. ]

He... [ An exasperated sound. ] He was trying to control you, wasn't he? Like when he left his mark on my soul when I kept refusing him.

( to hurt her, to control her. to ensure she knew that he was the only option in her life. not that it had worked out that way in the end )

But for as much power as he possesses the Dark Lord is also shortsighted.

( she doesn't say more, not quite able to admit to another what she'd felt. but maybe her lack of answer and what sabrina saw wioo be enough )
